Senate approves insurance cards on smartphones
The Senate approved legislation Thursday that would allow Texas drivers to prove their auto insurance coverage with a smartphone or other device, sending the bill to the governor.
The measure by Sen. Glenn Hegar, R-Katy, would bring Texas in line with six other states that already enable drivers to prove insurance coverage with a smartphone or wireless device. Another 21 states also are considering such a change.
Major insurers have already developed apps to handle the change in the six states that allow cellphone verification, and other insurers are making plans to have their own apps as more states join the movement.
