Practice Workplace Safety

Any workplace can become a danger zone, even a docile corporate office. That’s why, in 1970, Congress passed the Occupational Safety and Health Act (OSHA) which requires employers to follow specified safety standards in order to provide a non-hazardous workplace. It’s beneficial for employers to provide safety training during orientation (and periodic refresher courses) to maintain the health and wellness of all employees.

Following safety procedures may sound like it only applies to physical types of employment, but what about people who have desk jobs? Here are some tips to remain safe and healthy in an office environment:

  • Sit upright, facing forward, with your arms and shoulders relaxed
  • Wrists and hands should not rest on a sharp edge (try wrist pads)
  • Use a cushioned chair with supportive armrests
  • Position your monitor at eye-level, directly in front of you
  • Footrests and backrests can be used for support and comfort
  • Avoid propping your telephone between your ear and shoulder
  • Stand up to stretch or walk once an hour to alleviate strain and tension

Many workplace accidents occur because of careless behavior and can easily be prevented. Follow these basic safety rules, along with any rules specific to your employer, to minimize the risk of an accident:

  • Always walk (never run or jump)
  • Avoid using machinery that you are not trained on
  • Always wear protective clothing and equipment
  • Be aware of loose clothing or dangling hair near machinery
  • Keep your workspace clean to avoid trips and falls
  • Learn any associated hazards before handling products, equipment or machinery
  • Smoke only in designated areas and thoroughly extinguish tobacco products
  • Take precaution when near flammable materials
  • Ensure that ladders are stable before use (never substitute a chair or other object)
  • Learn emergency procedures and escape routes
  • Observe cautionary signs
  • Inform your supervisor if you believe a task is unsafe

Even when practicing workplace safety, accidents can happen. If you get injured on the job, alert your supervisor immediately and follow the employer-instated safety procedures. Failing to report an injury can make it difficult to file a worker’s compensation claim.

Always be mindful of your own safety and the safety of others around you, both at home and at work. Call Pan American Insurance at (915) 562-0009 for more information on El Paso business insurance.
